This is the first season that I haven't been able to watch American Idol religiously. I have only been able to catch the replays mostly. However, I have seen real raw talent in this newest batch of wannabes. Now that we have the Top 24, things are going to be heating up! Here are just a few worth listening to:
1. Michael Johns, Australian native - Watch his reaction to Simon's comment
2. Carly Smithson, Irish lass - No trace of a brogue at all when she sings. Ann and Nancy Wilson, move over.
3. David Archuleta - Great chops for someone so young. He gave a real nice spin to Bryan Adams' Heaven.
4. Robbie Corrico - Can you believe this guy briefly dated Britney Spears when she was at the brink of stardom?
5. Ramielle Malubay - Again, vested interest for us Filipinos. This petite gal shows how music is so much a part of our everyday lives.
6. Syesha Mercado - She rocked the auditions despite losing her voice...
7. Asia'h Epperson - Powerful and charming.
Bonus for comic relief: Christina Tolisano - What a character!
The Cultural Center of the Philippines and the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music presented Johann Strauss II's popular operetta Die Fledermaus ("The Bat") last January and Pepper and I were fortunate to have watched it. The operetta is the first in the series of the Cultural Center of the Philippines' opera offerings for 2008.
Die Fledermaus was written in the midst of the shadow of the economic crisis that had ravaged Austria in 1873 and has now become one of the most popular operettas of all time. It is included in the repertoires of most of the world's great opera houses. Its' setting is Vienna in the second half of the nineteenth century and revolves around a baron who is guilty of a minor offense and must spend several days in prison.
The plot of the operetta, with its usual mistaken identities and marital infidelities, is not to be taken seriously. But the music is something else, and has been loved by opera-goers since 1874. Stage director Floy Quintos has moved the setting from turn-of-the-century Vienna to the twilight of German democracy, just before Hitler rose to power in 1933.
The grand production includes Rachelle Gerodias (reigning soprano in Southeast Asia), soprano Nenen Espina (who plays of all things - Orlofsky, a Russian prince), tenors Randy Gilongo, Ronan Ferrer and Abdul Candao, baritone Noel Azcona, and many other talents. Herminigildo Ranera and Korean conductor Jae Joon Lee conduct the UST Symphony Orchestra.
My verdict: Excellent acting and the singing was faultless. My only gripe all throughout the night was the diction. For heaven's sake, they surely had time to practice enunciation? We were straining to understand what the characters were saying half the time...
Nevertheless, Pep and I enjoyed ourselves at the cast meet-and-greet afterwards. We gleefully took photos with each of the cast members, even posing the "Korean way" with the Korean conductor. Will post them once Pep figures out how to upload them via the internet - hahaha!
I've never been one to kick someone when they're down so when I heard Britney Spears had made another video, I let go of all my opinions on how she's been running her life lately and tried to listen to her new song objectively. Surprisingly, I found it okay. The beat was catchy and the lyrics seemed to be more personal. (The Philippines even rates a couple of mentions). Maybe she's reached a catharsis?
For whatever it's worth, I just think the media should lay off her a bit. It would definitely be pretty tough living under the scrutiny of paparazzi from the time you wake up till it's time to call it a day. Let's just hope she starts straightening out her life soon, not just for her two kids, but for her own sake.

Faithful and supportive friend that I am, I brought my sister and her brood to watch Jennie perform as Gertrude McFuzz at Market Market! in the kick-off of a series of Ayala Mall shows last November 18th. As expected, it was wonderful! My little niece and nephew, avid Dr. Seuss fans, were entranced. Good thing we were able to get great seats near center stage.
For those of you not familiar with Seussical The Musical, the main plot is based on Horton Hears a Who!, and centers on Horton the Elephant's endeavors to protect the people of Who-ville. It also features lovable characters and scenarios from many other Dr. Seuss books. Karylle Tatlonghari and Roxanne Barcelo alternately play the mischievous Cat In The Hat.
There was a long queue of parents and their kids wanting to have their photos taken with the colorful cast afterwards, mind you, so I took some, too...hehehe.

Rainy days make me want to just stay in bed, cuddle up with my dogs and have one of my dvd marathons. Today I chose to do a musical review. First up was Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (the original 1971 flick). Adapted from what is probably Roald Dahl's most popular book, this was definitely a fun way to start. The movie was as enjoyable a romp as when I first saw it many, many years ago. Gene Wilder was most definitely at his best. Here's one of my favorite scenes:
Although I didn't find fault with the new version starring Johnny Depp, Charlie Bucket and the other characters were more alive for me in the original. Maybe because it had musical numbers? Hahaha! Next, I went through Oliver! My Fair Lady, Wizard Of Oz, Brigadoon, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and now their songs keep playing over and over in my head!
