Update April 13, 2011: McDonald's pulled out the ad after the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CPCP) said that it was sending out the wrong message to children. In the commercial, a little girl asks a boy if she was already his girlfriend. The boy says no, claiming girlfriends are too demanding. However, he seems to change his mind when the girl says all she wants are french fries at McDonald's. Hmmm...didn't find anything offensive or even mildly controversial about an innocent ad. Did you?
The internet was all abuzz this weekend with the news of our beloved social network's demise. Friends were posting warnings on their homepages to make copies of all personal albums before March 15th or suffer their disappearance into oblivion. Tweets were likewise of the same vein on Twitter. It is staggering to realize just how much of an impact Michael Jackson had around the globe. On the day of his passing, countless radio and television stations aired their MJ marathons in celebration of the man and his music. Others chose to honor him by doing what he loved best - to sing and dance. Here are just several of them:
Just a few hours after I posted about Farrah Fawcett's death came the shocking news that Michael Jackson had suffered cardiac arrest, was in a coma, and finally died. I hadn't even quite grasped (and was in complete denial) at the first bit of news and now find it completely surreal that his death has been confirmed.
Tributes and accolades have begun pouring in from all over as Michael Jackson was a proverbial pied piper who impacted the world and sought to bring change in a world which he perceived as cruel and unfair. I expect awards shows et al.to follow suit shortly.
Personally, I grew up listening to, singing to, dancing to, and simply enjoying, the genius of the man. I am a proud owner of a lot of his LPs, cassettes, laser discs, CDs and DVDs. I think I have almost all his songs in my ipod. Although he had many personal troubles over the past decade, I couldn't quite get myself to dislike him or his music. I would still staunchly defend him despite heckling from friends and family.
I am happy and grateful to have seized the opportunity to see him perform live when he came over to do a concert in Manila. I knew then that I may never have the chance to do so again. As expected, that particular experience was one of wonder and amazement at the sheer brilliance, energy and artistry of the man.
With his loss, the world mourns a revered pop icon. His family lost a beloved son, brother and father, his friends a huge chunk of their heart and music fans an individual who, nothwithstanding personal tribulations, still sought to bring hope and inspiration to a world sorely in need. He leaves behind a legacy which crosses boundaries of race, religion, taste, gender and age. He revolutionalized the way music is made and experienced. For this, he's undoubtedly done good.

Whatever in the world made Archie choose Veronica over Betty?
Yes, folks, after about 70 years in Riverdale High, reports have it that the perpetual comic teen Archie Andrews finally gets down on hand and knee to ask Veronica Lodge to be his wife, leaving poor girl-next-door Betty Cooper (and presumably Reggie Mantle) in tears.
I grew up rooting for Betty, of course. Why should the rich girl have everything, right? She wasn't as sophisticated but I always felt she loved Archie more. Yet, she almost always wound up on the losing end. Facts of life maybe.
Oh well, maybe they just wanted to make the Archie comic a little more realistic. Wouldn't do for kids worldwide to look at things from within a rose-colored bubble...
Facebook and Twitter seem to be all the rage nowadays. When you chance upon long-lost friends and acquaintances or get to meet new ones, trust that the inevitable parting lines of "Do you have facebook? I'll invite you, ok?" will surely come out.
I have been an FB user since late 2007 and initially got hooked because of the novelty of having reconnected with some long-forgotten friends from grade school and high school and previously unknown relatives. Two years, a network that has expanded to 600+ and about a dozen reunions later, I find myself logging in not just to check up on buds and next of kin, but also to play the numerous applications which the creators so ingeniously embedded into the site to entice more and more people.
On weekends when I don't have plans to go out, I am usually online till dawn, playing either Fashion Wars, Sorority Life, Pet Society or Hangman, superpoking, receiving and giving gifts, smiles and hugs or answering some cheesy quiz like Which Foreign Guy Should You Date, etc.
