Celebrate Good Times
Today officially marks the beginning of my vacation. At the bank I work for, we are supposed to take a mandatory ten (working) days off as a compliance requirement. The remaining 5 days, I get to choose if I want to take separately or together. I was supposed to have been out yesteday but my boss asked me to come in to do last-minute finishing touches on the package we were working on - the one that we will be presenting on November 3rd to a region service-managed corporate name. Can you believe it, I have to go meet a client on my mandatory leave! But then my boss says we're not really going to the office per se so that takes care of any compliance issues...I guess there's consolation in that. Anyways, the whole point of this entry was to tell you guys about the good news I got today. Remember the HK trip I had sometime July this year where I got to be the Philippine representative to 2 seminars hosted by the Asia Pacific hub? Well, guess what? I was chosen to be among the few across the region to attend the Top 100 Club Induction Ceremony scheduled end of November! Yay! This email forwarded by my friend from the office is hot off the press:

Thirteen Things That Will Take You Back To "Manila In The 80's"As an homage to my friend, Nostalgia Manila, I have decided on this topic for my TT. Growing up in Manila in the 1980's was cool. It was fun. It was a time to enjoy going out with friends and soak in the "culture" that prevailed post-EDSA. It was awful, often-times cringe-worthy, fashion-wise; yet somehow nothing else can seem to top the experiences I had then. Here are some memories that defined that rockin' era for me: 1. Street couture for men: Sperry Topsiders, K-Swiss, Espadrilles (that you would queue up for in Whistle Stop or Cash and Carry), Tretorn or Dragonfly sneakers, white Spartan sneakers, argyle socks, woven leather belts, Chaser, Lacoste, Ralph Lauren, Le Tigre, Giordano (with and without collar) and one-size-fits-all Hanes T-shirts printed with your favorite New Wave band, Chaps, Bowling Green, Gray Flannel or Kouros cologne, Denman brushes, Dippity Do or Dep hair gel, Bermuda shorts worn with plaid long- sleeves.
2. Street couture for women: Pencil-cut skirt (calf-length, three to four inches above the ankle), Nenuco or De Ne Nes cologne, permed hair a la Madonna or teased bangs held up by extra-strong Aquanet, shoulder pads ala-Joan Collins (Alexis Carrington in Dynasty), Benetton, Esprit or Giordano shirts with matching Benetton, Esprit or Giordano bags, outfits bought at Sari-Sari, Tokyo, Hannah,Tickles and Regina's in Shoppesville, Greenhills.
3. You were considered "cool" if you attended the concerts of Mike Francis, Swing Out Sister, Menudo, Earth,Wind and Fire, James Ingram, Genesis and the like when they first set foot on our shores during their heyday.
4. Places to hang out in were: Jazz Rhythms, Rhythm & Booze, Cafe Ysabel, Bistro Burgos, Dean Street Cafe, Angelino's, East St. Louis, Faces, Cosmo, Kudos and the Matabungkay Beach Club or Baguio Country Club.
5. You could buy a bagful of Tarzan, Jojo or Bazooka Joe gum, Orange Swits, Clover bits, Sugar Powder Milk cans you would sip through a straw, Jack & Jill pretzels and Tootsie Roll for just twenty-five centavos.
6. Watching your favorite rock band like Rage, Alamid, Wolfgang and Razorback in places like Club Dredd and Weekends Live was the usual weekend gimick. Meanwhile, DWXB was the station of choice for New Wavers like me. 99.5RT came a close second (yes, even when they had Robbie the Rabbit as mascot).
7. Someone came up with the idea of putting watch-guards on Swatch watches and everyone jumped on the bandwagon.
8. Almost everyone you knew listened to Johnny Midnight expound on the wonders toning and placing pyramids beside your head while sleeping did for your health.
9. It was always such a thrill to greet your crush over FM radio.
10. Amado Pineda was the only weatherman you'd believe.
11. Most of your friends learned how to drive along Ortigas Center. Back then, it was all grass and undeveloped land.
12. TV staples: That's Entertainment, Lotlot & Friends, GMA Supershow, Batibot, Penthouse Live. For kids, Saturday Fun Machine ruled. Kids could also rely on Funny Komiks to chase the blues away while "cheaper" entertainment could be had by borrowing your maid's latest issue of Flash Movie Magazine or Jingle Songhits.
13. The US Dollar was equivalent to P18.00 then compared to P50 today. (Had to put in something bank-related - hehehe).

A Place Called Bedspace
Friday night of October 20, it came as a pleasant surprise when Jennie rang me up in the office to tell me she was in the vicinity and could she come up to see me while she lets the worst of rush hour pass. Of course, I gladly said yes. Since I didn't have any plans except go home immediately after work, I asked her if she'd like to have dinner so we can catch up. After calling her hubby, Rein, she said it was fine.
I drove to Greenbelt III and we decided to look around first to check out the restaurants available. A small place located right beside Red Box on the 3rd floor caught our fancy. It was cool. The interiors were simply deocrated and lighting was in subtle blue and lilac. The most interesting thing was how each table was made up to look like a bed. There were plush cushions to rest your body comfortably against and one could choose how to sit (indian, legs on the side, lounging back). Each had a breakfast tray where they put the food on so really felt like you were dining in the comforts of your room. They had a small area set aside for what we presumed was the dance floor, right beside the DJ spinning danceable tracks. The food was okay and the prices were reasonable. I ordered garlic shrimp pasta and chicken quesadillas topped by their own strawberry tea concoction while Jen had their spareribs. (I've a feeling that they really earn on their drinks, though).
Jen and I were so taken with the ambience that we inquired about the cost of renting the place for intimate gatherings. Turns out it would be too steep to rent it for just a birthday or shower but would most definitely be a good alternative for product launches and stuff. Be warned, though. Since they are a relatively new place, the only credit card they accept is Visa. So if you don't have Visa, better make sure you have cash. All in all, not a bad way to spend a quiet and enjoyable evening with a dear friend.

Thirteen Things You Didn't KnowI just love trivia! So, in the interest of being more than just an entertaining blog, this frog princess would also like to be able to say that my friends found hopping on my lilypad educational as well. Here then are some little bits which you probably never knew (or even thought about). I hope you find them as fascinating as I do. 1. What do bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laser printers all have in common? All were invented by women.
2. Which day are there more collect calls than any other day of the year? Father's Day
3. If you were to spell out numbers, how far would you have to go until you would find the letter "A"? One thousand
4. Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history: Spades - King David, Hearts - Charlemagne, Clubs - Alexander the Great & Diamonds - Julius Caesar
5. If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.
6. Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. It was ruled "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden"...and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.
7. The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV were Fred and Wilma Flintstone.
8. It is impossible to lick your elbow.
9. Men can read smaller print than women can; women can hear better.
10. In the 1400's a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have "the rule of thumb".
11. In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight."
12. In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down." It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's".
13. Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

Thirteen Things That A Woman Should HaveBeing a woman in our time is great. You are independent, respected, empowered. Just think about how far we've come from being merely decorative to being relegated to tending to the home then on to being considered an asset in the workplace. Here are just some "achievements" which a smart modern woman should have in her life... 1. An old love - one she can imagine going back to and or who reminds her of how far she has come.
2. Enough money within her control - to move out and rent a place of her own even if she never wants to or needs to.
3. Something perfect to wear - if the employer or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour.
4. A youth she would be content to leave behind - or a past juicy enough that will make her want to retell it in her old age.
5. A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra.
6. One friend who makes her laugh and one who lets her cry her eyes out.
7. A good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family.
8. Eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal that will make her guests feel honored.
9. A feeling of control over her destiny (like how to fall in love without losing herself).
10. Knowledge. It truly is power.
11. To acknowledge that she can't change the length of her calves, the width of her hips or her upbringing.
12. A place to go - be it to her best friend's kitchen table or a charming inn - when her soul needs soothing.
13. Courage - to quit a job, break up with a lover, fight for a worthy cause.

Ubiquitous Quiz 43
Your Values Profile | Loyalty: You value loyalty a fair amount. You're loyal to your friends... to a point. But if they cross you, you will reconsider your loyalties. Staying true to others is important to you, but you also stay true to yourself.
Honesty: You don't really value honesty. You do value getting your way, no matter what. And if a little lying is required to do that, no problem. A few white lies never hurt anyone (at least, that's what you tell yourself!)
Generosity: You value generosity a fair amount. You are all about giving, as long as there's some give and take. Supportive and kind, you don't mind helping out a friend in need. But you know when you've given too much. You have no problem saying "no"!
Humility: You value humility a fair amount. You tend to be an easy going, humble person. But occasionally your ego takes over. You have a slight competitive streak - and the need to be the best.
Tolerance: You value tolerance highly. Not only do you enjoy the company of those very different from you... You do all that you can to seek it out interesting and unique friends. You think there are many truths in life, and you're open to many of them. | technorati tag: ubiquitous quiz thursday

Four Girls And A Wedding
Went to my good friend Minell's wedding last Saturday, October 7th. As can be expected from all traditional Chinese weddings, this one had the ceremony at 3pm with the reception to follow at 7pm - which normally leaves the guests at a loss at what to do for the three to four hours in between till most of the guests arrive at the reception venue. Another Chinese friend told me that families take that time in between to observe certain "ceremonies" and have all the picture-taking over with. Poor Minell, she had to invite so many people from the bank that she and her groom had over 500 guests total. (Bankers alone, including ex and current, occupied five tables with 10-12 seats). Pepper, Jax and I decided to skip the wedding ceremony altogether so that took care of the after-wedding activities dilemma. We just went to the reception around 8pm, which thankfully was perfect timing. I am only realizing now what a hassle it is to drive in a long gown. Thank God for valet parking! April had to go to the wedding as she was part of the entourage so she was left entertain herself in between - hehehe. Here are some of the photos we took. You'd think we'd tire of taking so many pictures by now! technorati tags: Personal, friends, event, wedding

Feast One Hundred & Fourteen
Appetizer Name a song you know by heart. Too many to mention but one of my ultimate faves has got to be Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog.
Why are there so many Songs about rainbows? And what's on the other side Rainbows have visions And only illusions Rainbows have nothing to hide So we've been told And some choose to believe it I know they're wrong wait and see Someday we'll find it The rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me
Who says that ev'ry wish Would be heard and answered When wished on a morning star Somebody thought of that And someone believed it Look what it's done so far What's so amazing That keeps us star-gazing? And what do you think we might see Someday we'll find it The rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me
Coda: All of us under it's spell We know that it's probably magic
Have you been half asleep And have you heard voices I've heard them calling my name Is this the sweet sound That calls the young sailors The voice might be one and the same I've heard it too many times to ignore it It's something that I'm supposed to be Someday we'll find it The rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me
La la la la la la la La la la la la la la la Soup What will you absolutely not do in front of another person? Pick my nose, spit or take a crap. Having someone I know (or worse, even like) see me do those would be mortifying.
Salad How often do you use mouthwash and what kind do you like? Don't use it much. I do brush my teeth for a long time - about five minutes.
Main Course Finish this sentence: I am embarrassed when... I am asked to present in front of a lot of people. I seem to be getting the hang of it now, though.
Dessert What was the last food you craved? Pasta Ala Oglio with Prawns! Yum!

Thirteen Sites I Regularly VisitThe worldwide web is truly amazing. You can search for practically anything and come out with a thousand possibilities with one click. I love surfing the net and oftentimes come across so many interesting sites by accident. As a result, my list of favorite haunts in IE just keeps on growing! Here is a peek at some that I make sure I check out at least once every day...
1. My emails. Yup. Plural. I have Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and Excite. I have yet to wean my other friends away from the last two so I try to look at each daily just so I can redirect the strays. 2. My friends' blogs. What with all of us being so busy, sometimes this is the only way I can catch up with what's happening with them. Some of them are: White Rabbit, Unicorn Child, Mikey, CrazieQueen, Old Old Lady Of The Hills, GuitarChic, Mar, Chuch, Queer Chef and Empress Maruja. 3. Google. It is absolutely, indisputably the BEST search engine ever. 'Nuf said. 4. News. Both local and international. 5. Radio. I almost always have it open while surfing. This is my favorite station - has been since I was in grade school. Pretty loyal listener, huh? I like to update my I-Pod with the songs that are on the Top 40 for the week. 6. Online Dictionary. Whenever I come across a word that stumps me, I immediately have to look it up. 7. Friendster. It is a cool way to keep track of friends, especially long-lost ones. I cannot even begin to count how many have found me through this medium. 8. Amazon.com. If I had millions, I'd probably be buying stuff from it all the time. Books would be the top purchase, followed closesly by CDs and DVDs. 9. Celebrity Rags. I admit it. I love going through People and Entertainment Weekly. So sue me. 10. My account. Since I work in a bank, I have learned that it is prudent to keep track of one's money at all times. 11. Online Directory. This is a fab way to get around the metropolis, even find the best take-out. 12. Family Site. Since our Grand Reunion a year ago, it has become a habit to check it out for correspondence with faraway kin or latest updates on the fam. 13. YouTube. A veritable treasure trove of the most obscure videos from your childhood to mindless shenanigans by shameless camwhores. Guarantees hours of pure entertainment. Get the Thursday Thirteen code here!
