Seventh Heaven
Nope, this is not a smarmy review of the widely popular WB family drama. It is a salute to one of the greatest athletes of our generation.
American Lance Armstrong is living testament to the strength and endurance of the human spirit. Here was a cancer survivor determined to make his exit from his much beloved sport on his own terms. He did just that by winning his 7th consecutive yellow jersey in the latest Tour de France yesterday.
Emerging triumphant in a gruelling cross-country biking competition is no mean feat. One cannot imagine the many hours it took to build up the physical and mental stamina to win the race. Battling the big C while at it must have exacted a much higher toll.
Like his Arthurian legend namesake, he stood out as the bravest knight among this year's crop of talented cyclists by showing them that cancer should never be an obstacle in attaining one's dreams. We need more people like him to inspire, to give us a deeper appreciation of what God has given us, to make all of us realize that nothing should kill the champion inside.
P.S. It's also my brother's birthday today so permit me this one shout out: Happy, happy birthday, Eug!
