Once (More) On This Island
Had the chance to see the musical again last Wednesday (thanks to Jennie and her connections I got in for free!) and REMEMBERED just how much I really liked it. Back in college, Jen and I were able to watch its initial staging at the Manila Hotel. I hadn't even heard of it then. Immediately afterwards, though, I was hooked. The tunes kept playing in my head as we went home and came back to me the morning after. I even borrowed the CD from Jennie just so I could play it over and over again while going to sleep. Eventually just had to buy a copy for myself.
The story is simple enough. A poor girl from a fishing village falls in love with a rich boy who shatters her dreams of happily ever after. It is a tale of romance interspersed with laughter and tears. Raki Vega, more popularly known as the Born Diva grand prize winner, is a revelation. She sings with such power and possesses a beautiful crystal voice. Bituin Escalante also steals the show with her comedic turn as Asaka. Do catch the show at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater this month of May - it'll be worth it. Added incentive: This beloved Broadway hit was the recipient of eight 1990 Tony Award nominations and the winner of London's Olivier Award.
